Dr. Michael Squire

Biography

Michael Squire received his first degree in Classics from the University of Cambridge and pursued an MPhil studying German, art history, and comparative literature. He later became a Knox Fellow at Harvard and returned to Cambridge to complete his PhD. Squire has served as a Junior Research Fellow at Christ's College and taught in the Department of Classics at King's College London, where he was a Director of Research from 2016 to 2022. His academic career includes various fellowships and visiting appointments at prestigious institutions in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Stanford, and the Max-Planck Institute for the History of Science. Elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 2022, Squire's research interests encompass Greek and Roman material visual culture, ancient attitudes towards the body, sensory archaeology, and early Christian art and theology, as well as aesthetics in 18th and 19th-century Germany. He supervises PhD research in areas such as classical art and archaeology, ecphrasis, and Hegelian aesthetics, and he has significant experience in teaching classical languages and literature.
