Biography

Michael Stevenson is an Associate Professor in New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam, where his research interests include internet histories, digital culture, and new media with an emphasis on open source culture and alternative technology. He earned his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2013. From 2013 to 2017, he worked at the University of Groningen. In 2015, he was awarded a Veni grant for his project examining the programming language Perl as a starting point for understanding the technology, culture, and economics of the early web. Stevenson is a founding member of the Digital Methods Initiative and the creator of the short documentary 'Geeks in Cyberspace: The Story of the Early Web' (2019). Additionally, he has written extensively on digital culture and media research methods, co-authoring the textbook 'Doing Media Research' (Sage, 2025) aimed primarily at undergraduates. This book seeks to provide a shared foundation for the subdisciplines and methodological approaches of media studies.
