Biography

Michael Strong is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western University. He has served as President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research from 2018 to 2023 and previously as Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University. His clinical and research focus is primarily on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and he has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to 29 book chapters, and edited 4 textbooks. He has been an invited speaker at 180 lectures concerning ALS and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Forbes Norris Award and the Sheila Essay Award. Dr. Strong has been elected a Fellow of both the American Academy of Neurology and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. His research interests include understanding the pathogenesis of ALS, the role of altered RNA metabolism in disease genesis, and the involvement of altered tau metabolism in frontotemporal spectrum disorders associated with ALS.
