Biography

Michael Stumm received his undergraduate degree in Mathematics (dipl. math.) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in 1980 and 1984, respectively. He was a researcher at IBM Research and served as a Post-Doc in Stanford University’s Computer Science Department. In 1987, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor, becoming an Associate Professor in 1993 and a Professor in 1995. Stumm’s research interests lie in computer systems software, with an emphasis on operating systems, distributed systems, and multiprocessors. He co-founded several companies, including SOMA Networks and OANDA, a currency trading company, which he ran from 2001 to 2012. He is a member of ACM and IEEE.
