Biography

Michael Sutherland is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). He holds both M.Sc.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, specializing in land information management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Previously, he was a Professor in the Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management at the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he also served in various administrative roles including Head of the Department and Deputy Dean for Undergraduate Affairs. With extensive international teaching experience in land administration, real property law, GIS, and cadastral systems, he has been associated with multiple institutions including UNB, Ryerson University, York University, and the University of Guyana. Sutherland has significant direct research experience in geomatics-related fields such as multidimensional geospatial modeling and marine administration systems, along with indirect involvement in climate change and ocean governance. His academic contributions include 180 publications, with 48 of those being peer-reviewed, and he has an overall citation record exceeding 1965.
