Biography

Michael E. Tigar is a Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Law, having held significant teaching and legal practice roles throughout his career. He received his B.A. in 1962 and J.D. in 1966 from Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley. With a distinguished legal career, he was an associate partner at Williams & Connolly and later established his own firm, Tigar & Buffone, in 1996, practicing law in collaboration with his wife, Jane B. Tigar. He has been an acting professor at UCLA and held the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Law at the University of Texas. He also served as a visiting professor at the Université Paul Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence, France. Professor Tigar has authored and edited several influential books, including 'Thinking Terrorism: Threats to Civil Liberties in a National Emergency' and 'Law and the Rise of Capitalism.' He has contributed to the legal field with numerous law review articles and has represented high-profile clients such as the Washington Post and U.S. politicians in significant legal cases, including seven before the U.S. Supreme Court. Tigar chaired the ABA Section on Litigation from 1989 to 1990 and has played a vital role in legal education and advocacy throughout his career.
