Biography

Michael Tomlan directs the graduate program in historic preservation planning and teaches classes that address documentation techniques, fieldwork, preservation practice, urban change, and the relationships between museums, public preservation, planning, and religion. His involvement in finance and economics is noteworthy, and he serves as a member of the admissions committee for the Baker Program in Real Estate. He is also the faculty editor for Cornell Real Estate Review and offers courses in international case competitions. Tomlan currently chairs the board of Yosothor, based in Cambodia, and serves as the project director for the National Council for Preservation Education. He is the president of Historic Urban Plans, Inc., in Ithaca, and has dedicated a decade to chairing the Senior Board of Advisers for the Global Heritage Fund, which reviews nominations for management and conservation projects in Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Tomlan has consulted on various projects both abroad and domestically in states such as Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. His education includes a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
