Biography

Michael Toole is an Assistant Professor in the Japanese Studies Program within the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures. He earned his Ph.D. with a minor in Visual Cultures from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his A.M. in Japanese Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. Toole has previously taught Japanese Studies courses at the University of Denver as a Teaching Assistant Professor and has experience teaching at Macalester College. His scholarly work investigates the interplay of sexuality and visual culture in early modern Japan, particularly through the lens of Luso-Japanese cultural production. His current book project, "Queering Order: Visualizing Sexualities and Bodies in Print Culture of Early Modern Japan," examines how authors and artists navigated the complex intersections of sexual, visual, and bodily ordering in that historical context.
