Biography

Michael Toomey is a lecturer in International Relations at the University of Glasgow, having joined in January 2022. His academic career includes teaching positions at Rutgers University, Wenzhou-Kean University, the University of Limerick, the University of Reading, and Aberystwyth University. He worked as an external consultant for Freedom House, contributing to the Freedom in the World and Freedom of the Press reports during 2016 and 2017. Michael has finished a book project titled 'European Union Enlargement and Democratisation: Normative Disconnect in Hungary and Czechia' which is forthcoming from Edinburgh University Press. His research interests encompass broader themes such as the use of narratives in cultural trauma and populist political messaging, with previous research published in Global Studies Quarterly and New Perspectives. He is currently engaged in a project addressing the intersections of 21st Century globalization, racism, political extremism, and far-right ideologies while also focusing on pedagogical approaches in international relations, including the use of simulations in teaching. As a founding member and co-convenor of the Innovative Pedagogy Hub within the School of Social and Political Science, he organizes an annual workshop on practices in social sciences teaching.
