Michael Trigilio is a multimedia artist living in San Diego. He was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and received a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 1997, he became an ordained lay Buddhist priest, a role he resigned from after five years, and subsequently earned an M.F.A. from Mills College in 2003. His artistic work migrates across media, exploring themes of narcissism, humor, science fiction, and memory. Trigilio’s work has been exhibited in notable venues, including the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, LA County Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore. He has been involved in collaborative public-media projects such as Neighborhood Public Radio, which was included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. His artistic endeavors also include the development of Project Planetaria, which focuses on interpreting astronomical data through performance and media work. Trigilio has a musical project, Starvelab, which released a tape of modular synthesizer music titled SUGAR in 2014. In recent years, his work has engaged with topics of science fiction, empathy, and the critique of political and social structures through various mediums. Trigilio is a recipient of the UCSD Distinguished Teaching Award for his contributions in the Department of Visual Arts, where he teaches contemporary media art.
