Biography

Michael E. Tschakovsky is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University. His research focuses on cardiovascular physiology, particularly the integrative control of blood flow in exercising muscles. His primary interest is understanding how the cardiovascular system adjusts to meet the metabolic demands of active muscles while maintaining arterial blood pressure. His laboratory conducts both basic and biomedical research to address fundamental questions, such as how oxygen delivery is matched to the needs of exercising muscle and how this process is affected in patient populations like those with type 2 diabetes or peripheral artery disease. His recent projects also explore the impact of dietary nitrates on oxygen delivery during exercise and investigate the mechanisms through which different types of exercise can enhance brain plasticity in older adults. Tschakovsky’s teaching includes undergraduate and graduate courses that address advanced physiology and exercise responses, and he actively mentors students in a lab environment that supports innovative research methods. He is involved in various funding initiatives, including those from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, ensuring a dynamic research program at Queen’s University.
