Biography

Michael Udow has had an expansive and diversified career in symphonic and opera repertories, as well as contemporary solo and chamber music composition. He served as principal percussionist for the Santa Fe Opera from 1968 until his retirement in the 2009 season. His credentials include membership in the New Orleans Philharmonic, Summit Brass, and the dance/percussion duo Equilibrium, among other distinguished ensembles. Michael has designed and manufactured innovative percussion instruments and accessories that are used by major orchestras and percussionists worldwide. During the 2009–2010 season, he embarked on a two-month concert tour in Asia, which included master classes and multiple-week residencies at major conservatories in Seoul, Tokyo, Shenyang, Beijing, Shanghai, and Taipei. As a solo percussionist, Michael has performed notable works and has been involved in various international music festivals. He has received grants from the Michigan Arts Alliance and Michigan Council for Arts. His recordings have been released on multiple labels including Columbia and Orion. He has taught and coordinated percussion for five International Festival Youth Orchestras and has served as a jury member and clinician for International Marimba Competitions in Stuttgart and Japan.
