Michael Vardon is a world-leading scholar researching the teaching of natural capital and ecosystem services accounting, applying decision-making in both public and private sectors. His knowledge of environmental accounting spans the collection of basic data, account compilation, and analysis of indicators in key policy areas such as biodiversity conservation and water management. He undertook his PhD studies at the Australian National University with a thesis focused on the ecology of flying-foxes in monsoonal Australia. In 2000, Michael joined the Australian Bureau of Statistics, working on various environmental topics until he became the Director of the Centre of Environment and Energy Statistics in 2014. He held secondments with the National Water Commission in 2006, the United Nations from 2007 to 2009, and the Bureau of Meteorology from 2012 to 2013. Michael is a member of the Editorial Board for the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) and serves on the United Nations Policy Technical Expert Committee for the World Bank’s Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) Global Partnership.
