Biography

Michael Vician is an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University and the Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit for the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Originally from Brno, Czechoslovakia, he obtained his MD from Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, in 1997. Following this, he completed a residency-training program in Internal Medicine at University Hospital Giessen, where he focused on intensive care and earned his title 'Magna Cum Laude'. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care, along with obtaining the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine in 2010. Before joining Dalhousie University, he worked as a staff intensivist in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at University Hospital Giessen. Since 2012, he has been the Director of CVICU at Maritime Heart Centre, contributing extensive expertise in ICU care for cardiac surgery patients. His professional interests include multidisciplinary high-fidelity medical simulation training for medical students and residents, management of advanced heart failure and extracorporeal life support, and he has a particular focus on echocardiography and point-of-care ultrasound for diagnosing critically ill patients.
