Biography

Michael Walter is a Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on the genetics of developmental abnormalities and glaucoma, specifically investigating the molecular genetics involved in human disease. Walter obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph and his PhD from the University of Toronto. He completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in England and at the University of Cambridge. Since joining the University of Alberta in 1993, he has served as Chair of the Department of Medical Genetics from April 2005 to March 2020. Walter has been an editor for the journals Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science and the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. His laboratory studies the genetics of glaucoma, examining mutations in the transcription factor FOXC1 and their association with inherited forms of the disease. He has published extensively on various aspects of glaucoma, including response to medications and the underlying genetic mechanisms.
