Michael Waters is a Professor and the Director of the Center for the Study of the First Americans at Texas A&M University. With expertise in American studies and geoarchaeology, Dr. Waters has conducted archaeological investigations across the United States, Mexico, Russia, Jamaica, and Yemen. His current research includes examining the Debra L. Friedkin site and Hall's Cave in Texas, as well as a continental scale project focusing on radiocarbon dating of Late Pleistocene megafauna to understand the timing and tempo of extinctions and the role humans played in the disappearance of certain animals. He has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and books, including 'Principles of Geoarchaeology: A North American Perspective'. Dr. Waters has been recognized with several awards, including the Kirk Bryan Award in 2003 and the Rip Rapp Archaeological Geology Award in 2004. He became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2022 and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 2004. In 2017, he was named a Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University and became a Regents Professor in 2023.
