Biography

Michael Werner is a tenured Associate Professor of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) at the University of Amsterdam, a position he has held since August 2020. He studied information systems at the University of Hamburg and the University of Münster in Germany, and graduated with a Management degree from the University of Wollongong in Australia. He completed his PhD at the University of Hamburg. Before his current role, he served as a Senior Lecturer for AIS at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand and held an Associate Professor position in AIS at Copenhagen Business School. His research primarily focuses on data science within the context of accounting and auditing, specifically investigating novel data analysis techniques applied to statutory audits. His work has been recognized with the American Accounting Association’s AIS Section Outstanding Dissertation Award. He has published in notable journals such as the International Journal of Accounting Information Systems and IEEE Transactions on Services Computing. In addition, he has contributed to various research projects related to automation in financial audits and serves as an academic advisor to the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) on their Data Analytics Project Advisory Panel.
