Biography

Professor Michael Williams joined the MIT Physics Department as an Assistant Professor in July 2012. He grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and received an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Physics from Saint Vincent College in 2001, followed by a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. He then served as a postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London from 2008 to 2012. At MIT, he is the founder and leader of the LHCb group and has become the inaugural Deputy Director of the NSF AI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions. His research primarily focuses on the search for unknown particles and forces, particularly those that may comprise the dark sector of matter. He also studies the emergent properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Professor Williams is at the forefront of employing machine learning algorithms and advanced data-science tools to enhance particle physics research.
