Biography

Dr. Woods’ research interests span numerous diseases, particularly focusing on genetic factors involved in hereditary conditions. He utilizes the unique Newfoundland and Labrador population, leveraging a wealth of clinical data obtained through collaboration with colleagues and families affected by rare diseases with unknown genetic etiology. His work has aimed to identify genetic basis of diseases and has successfully translated laboratory discoveries to clinical practice in a relatively short period of time. Dr. Woods currently operates in the Craig L. Dobbin Genetics Research Centre, where collaborative efforts with scientists and clinicians facilitate productive research endeavors. His lab primarily involves students and staff working on datasets generated through whole exome sequencing derived from family-based studies. This approach, combined with bioinformatics tools and functional assays, aids in identifying disease-causing mutations and supports the development of clinical genetic screening protocols that can ultimately assist patients and families.
