Michael Zaugg obtained his medical degree in 1989 from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich in Switzerland. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine and subsequently Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Zurich. In 1997, he became a fellow in Anesthesiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, USA. Following this, he completed a basic science fellowship in Cell Biology and Cardiovascular Physiology at the State University of New York. In 1999, Dr. Zaugg returned to Zurich, Switzerland, where he conducted seminal research in his own laboratory, while also practicing as a clinician at the University Hospital Zurich. In 2008, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and was appointed as a Full Professor of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He completed his Executive Master of Business Administration in 2011, focusing on management and hospital finance. internationally, Dr. Zaugg leads a research group that specializes in proteomics, transcriptomics, genetics, and metabolomics, with projects investigating mechanisms of organ protection and stem cell research. His research is consistently funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and he is currently supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF). He has received several awards for his contributions to research and is actively engaged in teaching anesthesiology through simulations. Dr. Zaugg regularly publishes in peer-reviewed medical journals and is invited to give lectures at international meetings.
