Biography

Michaela Schäuble is a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Bern, where she focuses on media anthropology. As the co-founder of the EMB-Ethnographic Mediaspace Bern, she has created a platform for students and staff to experiment with audiovisual media and explore non-text-based forms of knowledge generation. Her research explores belief apparatuses, particularly the role of embodiment and sensory experience in religious practices. In recent years, her work has concentrated on ecological perception and the marginalization of subaltern voices, grounded in fieldwork in Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean. Additionally, her interests include the iconographies of ecstasy and the study of tarantism, a spider possession cult prevalent in Southern Italy. Schäuble possesses a diverse academic background, previously serving as a lecturer at the University of Manchester and a research fellow at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. She has received numerous prestigious awards and fellowships and has published extensively in notable journals. Currently, she leads several research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, focusing on anthropological perspectives on technology and ecological issues in art and literature.
