Biography

Michail Stamatakis is a Professor of Computational Inorganic Chemistry and a Tutorial Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford. He leads a research group that develops and applies multiscale computational approaches to understand heterogeneous catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions. His methods are widely disseminated in the form of open-source software, benefiting the academic community. Michail collaborates extensively with experimentalists and industry leaders to guide the development of improved catalysts for energy conversion, storage, and sustainable chemical manufacturing. He has received prestigious awards including the Faraday Division Horizon Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2022 and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2023. Michail joined Oxford Chemistry in 2023, after serving as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Associate Professor at the University College London from 2012 to 2022. He holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (2004), and a PhD from Rice University, USA (2009), followed by post-doctoral research at the University of Delaware, USA (2009-2012). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
