Biography

Michal Kalkowski graduated with a Master's degree in Control Engineering and Robotics from AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland. After a brief period in the industry, he joined the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton to pursue a PhD in 2010. His doctoral research focused on removing structural accretions, such as aircraft icing, from structures using mechanical waves excited by piezoelectric actuators. During this time, he developed numerical models of wave propagation in elastic piezoelectric media. Following graduation, he completed EPSRC-funded post-doctoral projects in Southampton, with active vibration control and nonlinear vibration interrogation of underground structures as his main focuses. In 2017, Michal joined the Non-destructive Evaluation Group at Imperial College London, where he worked on a Horizon 2020-funded project aimed at characterizing and inspecting complex materials using ultrasound. Notably, he developed numerical and semi-analytical models of wave propagation in complex austenitic steel welds and inversion techniques that allow for the determination of local grain orientations using ultrasound. In September 2021, Michal returned to the ISVR as a Lecturer in Dynamics.
