Biography

Michal Szczesniak is a Research Fellow at the St George & Sutherland Clinical School, located on the grounds of St George Hospital. His research interests include assessing the impact of radiotherapy treatment on head and neck cancer, particularly focusing on physiology and swallowing. The eventual goal is to optimize radiotherapy treatment in order to minimize the incidence of swallowing dysfunction. He is developing and validating techniques to measure the biomechanics of swallowing function, including visualizing pressure and flow while collecting sensory data from regions such as the gut, colon, gastroesophageal junction, and pharynx. His work also involves measuring tissue compliance in the upper digestive tract, and encompasses broader research areas such as gastroenterology and hepatology. Michal has a PhD in Medicine from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) from the University of Newcastle. He has served on the St George Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and the University of New South Wales Post Doc Advisory Committee.
