Biography

Michalis Sotiropoulos is a Lecturer in Modern Greek Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He was born and raised in Athens, Greece, where he studied Political Science at the University of Athens. He pursued further studies in history, obtaining a Master's degree from the University of York and a Doctorate from Queen Mary, University of London. His academic career includes positions at prestigious institutions such as Princeton University and the University of Athens. Sotiropoulos's research is centered on the intellectual history of the modern Greek world and the Age of Revolutions, particularly focusing on the formation of the modern Greek state and the impacts of liberalism during the 19th century. He has published extensively, including a recent book titled 'Liberalism Revolution: Intellectual Foundations Greek State, c. 1830–1880', which received the 2024 Edmund Keeley Book Prize from the Modern Greek Studies Association. His interests also include Philhellenism and its transnational implications, and he is currently editing a volume titled 'Philhellenism Greek Revolution 1821: Global History'. Sotiropoulos is actively involved in teaching and supervising postgraduate research, encouraging studies that adopt global and intellectual approaches to the history of the Greek world.
