Biography

Dr. Michel Barbeau received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Université de Montréal. He completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Université de Sherbrooke in 1985 and joined the faculty there as a professor. From 1991 to 1999, he taught at Université de Sherbrooke and spent an academic year as a visiting researcher at the University of Aizu in Japan. In 2000, he joined the School of Computer Science at Carleton University. His research interests focus on non-classical wireless networks, including wide area ad hoc networks, underwater communication networks, quantum communication networks, and software-defined radios. Dr. Barbeau collaborates with undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students to develop acoustic networks for underwater communication, aiding in water-based surveillance and coastal environmental monitoring. His team is investigating solutions to the challenges of multipath propagation of underwater acoustic waves, including issues caused by the reflection of signals at the sea surface and seabed, as well as refraction due to factors like water temperature and surface waves. They have been testing prototypes in locations such as the Rideau Canal in Ottawa.
