Dr. Barbeau received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universite de Montreal and returned to Universite de Sherbrooke where he completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science in 1985. He joined the faculty as a professor and taught at Universite de Sherbrooke from 1991 to 1999. During this time, he also spent an academic year as a visiting researcher at the University of Aizu in Japan. In 2000, he joined the School of Computer Science at Carleton University. His research specializes in non-classical wireless networks, and he is currently involved in developing acoustic networks for underwater communication to aid in water-based surveillance and coastal environmental monitoring. He collaborates with a team of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students to explore methods of using mechanical vibrations to send encoded messages between underwater nodes. His research addresses challenges such as multipath propagation of underwater acoustic waves, influenced by reflections from the sea surface and seabed, as well as refraction due to factors like water temperature and surface waves.
