Biography

Michel Bierlaire, a full professor in the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), specializes in transportation systems analysis, travel demand modeling, and discrete choice modeling. He earned his PhD in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Namur, Belgium, in 1998. His academic career began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a research associate project manager in the Intelligent Transportation Systems Program. In 1998, he joined EPFL, where he became an associate professor in 2006 and was further appointed as director of the Transport Mobility Laboratory. In 2012, he became a full professor and has since directed various initiatives including the Transportation Center at EPFL. He has published over 164 papers in international journals, authored books and book chapters, contributed to conference proceedings, and delivered numerous scientific seminars. His research focuses primarily on modeling and optimization techniques for transportation systems, including active demand modeling and dynamic traffic management systems. Bierlaire is also a founding editor of the EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics, and has held editorial positions in various journals including Operations Research.
