Biography

Dr. Desjardins obtained his Ph.D. in 1991 from the Department of Anatomy (Pathology and Cell Biology) at the University of Montreal. He then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Gareth Griffiths from 1991 to 1994. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating the formation and maturation of phagosomes, which are key organelles responsible for destroying certain parasites and bacteria in macrophages. In 1994, he joined the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology as a full professor. His laboratory investigates the role of the immune system in Parkinson's disease and is currently developing a large-throughput drug screening assay to identify drugs that inhibit mitochondrial antigen presentation pathways involved in disease pathology.
