Dr. Michel Dumontier

Biography

Michel Dumontier is a Distinguished Professor of Data Science at Maastricht University and the founder of the Institute of Data Science. He co-founded the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles, aiming to unlock the potential of data for scientific research. His expertise lies in building and mining knowledge graphs for drug discovery and personalized medicine. Dr. Dumontier is the principal investigator for multiple funding projects including those from NWO, Horizon Europe, MCSA NIH/NCATS, and ARPA-H. He coordinates the AIDAVA and REALM projects and serves as the principal investigator for the NCATS Biomedical Data Translator and the GENIUS AI lab for generative AI technologies. As the editor-in-chief of the journal Data Science, he has made internationally recognized contributions in bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, semantic technologies, and ontologies within linked data. His research specialties cover a broad range including FAIR data, generative artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, semantic technologies, data quality, integration, and drug discovery. He completed his BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Manitoba in 1999 and his PhD in Bioinformatics at the University of Toronto in 2004, thereafter serving as an Assistant/Associate Professor at Carleton University from 2005 to 2013 and as an Associate Professor at Stanford University from 2013 to 2016 before becoming a Distinguished Professor at Maastricht University in 2017.
