Michel van Putten studied Medicine at Leiden and Applied Physics at Delft. He received his PhD in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology in 2000 and became a registered neurologist the same year. He worked for several years in the Department of Neurology at HagaZiekenhuis in The Hague before moving to Enschede in 2004. There, he headed the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at Medisch Spectrum Twente, a large teaching hospital, and joined the Institute of Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. In December 2008, he was appointed as a Professor of Clinical Neurophysiology. His research focuses on developing new techniques to improve brain monitoring in the ICU, with a strong emphasis on detecting epileptiform discharges and ischemia. EEG serves as an important tool in his studies. Alongside his clinical work and research, he is committed to teaching and supervises PhD and Master students. He is also a co-founder of Clinical Science Systems, a company dedicated to developing medical software for clinical applications.
