Michela Lai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy at Queen's University. Her research focuses on Particle Astrophysics, specifically in the field of experimental physics. She is involved in innovative data analysis techniques and the development of detectors made from noble elements, such as argon. These detectors are designed to observe phenomena related to dark matter, which constitutes approximately three-quarters of the universe's mass. One of her significant projects includes the construction of tonne-scale detectors like the DEAP-3600, located at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Canada. This work aims to search for rare interactions that could provide insights into the fundamental constituents of the universe and the nature of dark matter. In addition to her academic responsibilities, Lai is passionate about mentoring new graduate students and fostering their research skills. Outside of academia, she enjoys Wing Chun martial arts and has a keen interest in literature, with 'Ocean Sea' by Alessandro Baricco being one of her favorite books.
Department of Computing offers research-based, project-based, and course-based patterns.
