Biography

Michele Burman has a background in sociology, psychology, and law, and is a feminist criminologist with longstanding research interests in women and crime, as well as responses to gender-based violence. Before joining the University of Glasgow, she worked at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen and for the Scottish Government. From 2015 to 2019, she served as Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Michele is a co-founder and was the lead of the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR), a unique cross-institutional partnership among four Scottish universities from 2006 to 2016. She has published widely on criminal justice responses to rape and domestic abuse, and over her career has held 30 research grants from various prestigious funders. Notably, Michele was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) in recognition of her work, and she was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2019 for her services to criminology. Her current research projects focus on gender, crime, and justice, addressing issues such as the experiences of survivors in the criminal justice system and the impacts of domestic violence.
