Dr. Michèle Lamont

Biography

Michèle Lamont is a Professor of Sociology and African American Studies and the Robert Goldman Professor of European Studies at Harvard University. Born in 1957 in Quebec, she studied political theory at the University of Ottawa before obtaining a doctorate in sociology at the University of Paris in 1983. Following her education, she completed post-doctoral research at Stanford University and has served on the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin (1985-1987), Princeton University (1987-2002), and Harvard University (2003-present). Her work focuses on cultural sociology, inequality, and race, with a special interest in immigration and comparative sociology. She has published several influential books and numerous articles in prestigious journals such as the American Sociological Review and the American Journal of Sociology. Lamont has held significant positions, including serving as the 108th president of the American Sociological Association in 2016-2017. She has been elected to various esteemed organizations and has received multiple awards for her contributions to the field of sociology.
