Dr. Michèle Martin

Biography

Michèle Martin is a Professor Emerita with a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto. She has a Master’s degree from Université de Montréal and a Bachelor's degree in Communication from UQAM. Her research focuses on historical sociology, technological development, political economy of communication, and socio-cultural analysis of media. She has a particular interest in the political economic development of communication forms and their impact on society. Michèle's latest book, 'Images of War: 19th Century Illustrated Periodicals and the Development of National Identities,' published by University of Toronto Press in 2006, analyzes how editors of 19th-century periodicals used imagery to disseminate national ideologies and maintain readership. Her other works include books such as 'Victor Barbeau, pionnier de la critique culturelle journalistique' and 'Hello Central? Gender, Culture and Resistance in the Formation of Telephone Systems.' Michèle has contributed articles to various journals and has presented papers at international conferences. She has also served as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as Goldsmiths College, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences. She teaches on topics related to the political economic development of communication technologies, the socio-historical study of media, visual representation in politics, and feminist communication theories.
