Biography

Michelle Alexopoulos is a Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto with a cross appointment to the Faculty of Information. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, specializing in economics and mathematics, and holds MA and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Northwestern University. Her research primarily focuses on business cycles, monetary policy, technical change, economic uncertainty, labor markets, and productivity. Her work, supported by public and private grants, has been published in top-tier economics journals and presented at numerous Central Banks, international conferences, and industry think tanks. She is a qualified expert witness in areas such as technical change and macroeconomics, and she is currently the Executive of the Canadian Economics Association, co-chair of the Canadian Economics Diversity Committee, and a member of the C.D. Howe Business Cycle Council. Additionally, she is a Faculty Affiliate of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society and the Data Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto. In February 2025, the Bank of Canada announced her appointment as an external Deputy Governor for a two-year term starting March 17, 2025.
