Michelle Feng joined Victoria Symphony as Principal Oboe in 2024. Raised in Vancouver, BC, her authoritative, soulful playing has enraptured audiences around the globe. In 2023, she was invited to spend half a year in New Zealand as Guest Principal Cor Anglais with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, where she was featured as a soloist in Copland’s Quiet City. Michelle has performed as a soloist with several ensembles including the Victoria Symphony, Colburn Orchestra, and Sarasota Music Festival Orchestra. She was also a Guest Principal Oboe with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and has performed chamber music with groups such as the Ad Mare Wind Quintet, Banff Festival Orchestra, and Chamber Music Hawaii. In addition to her orchestral career, she is a dedicated educator at the University of Victoria and maintains a private studio for students of various ages. Michelle provides a welcoming experience for students from diverse backgrounds, offering insights into performance psychology and musician wellness. She is also committed to music outreach, having performed as an actor-musician in educational shows for children. Recent projects include collaborations with the Canadian publisher Éditions Plamondon on a series of arrangements for oboe and English horn to be released in 2024 and 2025. Michelle is a graduate of the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where she studied under Allan Vogel.
