Biography

Michelle Keown is a Professor specializing in Postcolonial Literature at the University of Edinburgh. Born in New Zealand, she completed her BA in English Linguistics and MA in English Literature, focusing on Māori Literature in English at the University of Waikato. After moving to the UK in 1997 under a Commonwealth Scholarship, she completed her PhD in Postcolonial Studies at the University of Kent in 2000. She began her academic career with a Lectureship in Colonial and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Stirling in 2001 and joined Edinburgh's English Department in 2005. Professor Keown teaches courses on Postcolonial writing, New Zealand and Pacific literature, and Modernism and Empire. She is actively involved in academic communities, contributing to various journals and serving on boards, including the UK Postcolonial Studies Association. Keown's research interests encompass aspects of postcolonial literature theory with a significant focus on the Pacific region. Her publications include works on Māori and Pacific writing and she is currently working on projects related to postcolonial diasporas, translation studies, and nuclear colonialism. She is open to supervising research proposals in these fields.
