Biography

Michelle Lopez is an Associate Professor at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, where she engages in rigorous conceptual practice and a boldly experimental approach to her work. Her artistic output includes installations and sculptural works that are deeply rooted in the research of iconography and cultural phenomena. Lopez's work often critiques the interplay between 'products' and capitalism, using contradictory materials in her explorations. Notable among her projects is 'Blue Angels,' a crumpled aluminum and stainless steel sculpture that reflects on technological failure and the performative aspect of the artist’s body within the work. Furthermore, her sound kinetic installation 'Halyard' examines invisible structures of power in Western Empire. Lopez has conducted solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions, including Fondazione Trussardi in Milan and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. She has also participated in public projects and group exhibitions at major venues such as PS1/MOMA and the Brooklyn Museum. Additionally, her work has been reviewed in respected publications including Artforum and The New Yorker. With an academic tenure that includes teaching at Yale and UC Berkeley, Lopez holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and a BA in Literature and Art History from Barnard College.
