Native to Vancouver, Canada, Michelle Mares began her musical studies at the age of 4 at the Vancouver Academy of Music. As a child prodigy, she drew attention from notable musicians such as András Schiff, Ivan Moravec, and Gaby Casadesus. Ms. Mares enjoyed the rare privilege of studying with the world’s eminent musicians, including Canada’s own Jane Coop, Leon Fleisher, Karl Heinz Kämmerling, György Kurtág, and Alfred Brendel. Her approach to music is deeply rooted in the treasured legacy of her teachers, and her own teaching is significantly influenced by them. Throughout her career, she has won several prestigious competitions, including the Geneva International Competition, CBC Young Performer’s Competition, Hamburg Steinway Competition, Montreal Symphony Competition, and S.A.C.E.M. Prize at the Casadesus International Competition. Ms. Mares has performed internationally, both as a soloist and chamber musician. Since 2008, she has been based in Victoria, where she teaches regularly at the University of Victoria and previously at the University of British Columbia, in addition to her private piano studio. She is a popular guest adjudicator at regional competitions and festivals, and is often invited to perform and give masterclasses.
