I'm Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. I completed my PhD at the University of Washington in 2012. My research focuses on social stratification and inequality, particularly economic insecurity with special emphasis on wealth, debt, and social class. I adopt an intersectional approach that considers race, class, gender, and often overlooked dimensions like disability in the context of inequality. My methodological expertise includes qualitative and quantitative research approaches and I utilize survey development and longitudinal data analysis in my work. Recent projects investigate the dimensions of wealth inequality and labor market outcomes for individuals with disabilities, combining interests in processes of economic insecurity and cumulative disadvantage. In addition to my research, I teach various courses on stratification, policy, statistics, and methods within the department, including topics like social stratification and social statistics. I also direct the Certificate in Applied Social Science Research and have created a course focused on applied research internships. My academic work often integrates both theoretical frameworks and empirical analysis, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of complex social dynamics.
