Biography

Michelle Newberry joined the University of Southampton in 2018, having previously worked in various academic and non-academic roles in further and higher education as well as the NHS and the Prison Service. She served as a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology at both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Portsmouth, and has also lectured at Brunel University and Richmond College. Her primary research interests encompass understanding the motivations behind criminal behaviour, including violent crime, domestic violence, and animal cruelty. She has investigated the interplay between domestic violence perpetrators and animal abuse and is currently examining the motivations for engaging in wildlife crime, specifically poaching of rhino horn and pangolin scales in East Africa. In addition to her research, Michelle plays numerous roles at the University of Southampton, including Programme Director for the British Psychological Society accredited BSc Hons Criminology Psychology. She teaches several modules and is actively involved in doctoral supervision. Her work has led to numerous awards and nominations for her dedication and inspirational teaching, illustrating her commitment to her students and the field of forensic psychology.
