Biography

Dr. Michelle Ploughman is a Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation, Neuroplasticity, and Brain Recovery at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her research is focused on creating new rehabilitation treatments aimed at repairing the brain and restoring lost functions. She is particularly dedicated to promoting recovery for individuals affected by stroke and multiple sclerosis, two prevalent neurological disorders in Canada. With over 400,000 Canadians living with the aftereffects of stroke, Dr. Ploughman seeks to address the enduring motor, cognitive, and language deficits that impact quality of life and productivity. Additionally, her work encompasses the challenges faced by the 100,000 individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in Canada, a neuroinflammatory disease that can have devastating effects on movement, balance, vision, and cognition, especially among young adults. As a tier 2 Canada Research Chair, Dr. Ploughman's work involves innovative approaches that combine aerobic exercise with cognitive training to create recovery synergies for stroke and MS patients. Her focus on restorative methods highlights the profound effects her research has on patients and their communities.
