Biography

Michelle Quay specializes in Persian language and literature, currently serving as an Assistant Teaching Professor at Brown University. She completed her doctorate in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. She also holds an M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago. Her research centers on premodern and modern Persian literature, as well as contemporary Iranian cinema and culture. Dr. Quay has co-edited the 'Routledge Handbook of Persian Literary Translation' and received the inaugural Mo Habib Translation Prize for Persian Literature in 2023. Her translations have appeared in notable publications such as 'Words Without Borders' and 'Asymptote Journal.' Previously, she taught Persian language and literature at the University of Chicago and Columbia University, where she also participated in the GlobalLIT Project, focusing on translating classical Persian texts. Dr. Quay is dedicated to advancing Persian language pedagogy and has contributed to the Routledge Handbook on Language Acquisition Pedagogy for Persian. Driven by her passion for Persian culture from her upbringing in Southern California’s significant Persian-speaking diaspora, she continues to engage students in the richness of Persian language and literature.
