Dr. Michiel Adriaens

Biography

Michiel Adriaens is an Assistant Professor at the Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology, specializing in Bioinformatics. With a strong training in bioinformatics, he focuses on regulatory genomics and multi-omics studies concerning human nutrition and cardiometabolic diseases. His primary research aims to develop personalized metabolic models to predict and understand metabolic impairments in patients with cardiomyopathy. The adverse effects of these impairments can severely affect heart function, leading to serious complications. Adriaens is dedicated to advancing systems biology tools that can detect metabolic issues early, thereby offering targets for prevention and personalized recovery. His contributions extend into the field of precision nutrition, where he has been involved in creating computational methods for targeted interventions. He participated in the PERSON study which implemented interventions to tackle tissue-specific insulin resistance among overweight and obese adults and is currently engaged in the PRECINUT study, using machine learning to custom-fit dietary recommendations monitored through wearables and food diaries. Adriaens aspires to leverage his expertise to innovate in the area of digital twinning applications to enhance the management of complex health conditions.
