Biography

Miguel Poiares Maduro is the Sidley Austin-Robert D. McLean ’70 Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School. He also holds the Vieira de Almeida Chair Professor of Global Law at Universidade Católica in Portugal. Maduro’s scholarship focuses on European Union law, international economic law, constitutional law, transnational governance, and comparative institutional analysis. Additionally, he has interests in sports governance and social innovation. Previously, he served as the director of the European University Institute's School of Transnational Governance and held various ministerial roles within the Portuguese Government, including as the Minister Adjunct to the Prime Minister. Maduro has also served as an Advocate General at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. He has published and edited numerous scholarly works, including a book titled “Democracy Pandemic,” co-edited with Robert W. Kahn (Cambridge University Press, 2020). Maduro earned his Ph.D. in law from the European University Institute and completed his B.Sc. at the Universidade de Lisboa.
