Dr. Miguel Materin

Biography

Miguel Materin, MD, serves as the Division Chief of Ocular Oncology at the Duke Eye Center and holds professorships in both Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology. His clinical practice primarily focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ocular tumors, specializing in ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma, choroidal hemangioma, retinal hemangioblastoma, and ocular metastases. He has extensive experience with related conditions and syndromes, including von Hippel Lindau disease and Tuberous Sclerosis. Since joining Duke in September 2016, Dr. Materin has made significant contributions to the field, previously serving as an Associate Professor at Yale University, where he directed the Ophthalmic Oncology service. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited to speak internationally, delivering more than 300 lectures. His professional accolades include the Achievement Award and Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and he is an active member of several reputable organizations related to ocular oncology. Dr. Materin's educational background includes an MD from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he has held various noteworthy positions in the field, including significant roles in clinical research initiatives.
