Biography

Mihalis Yannakakis is the Percy K. Vida L. W. Hudson Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. He has an extensive academic background, having obtained his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1975, followed by a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University in 1979. His professional experience includes a significant tenure at Bell Labs Research from 1978 to 2001, where he served as a Member of the Technical Staff and ultimately became the Head of the Computing Principles Research Department. Subsequently, he was the Director of Computing Principles Research at Avaya Labs in 2001-2002 and held a professorship at Stanford University from 2002 to 2003 before joining Columbia in 2004. His research interests are multifaceted, encompassing design and analysis of algorithms, complexity theory, combinatorial optimization, game theory, databases, modeling, and verification and testing of reactive systems.
