Dr. Mika Sipponen

Biography

Mika Sipponen is an Associate Professor at Stockholm University, specializing in Materials Chemistry. He earned his Doctor of Science in Chemical Technology from Aalto University in Finland in 2015, supervised by Professor Simo Laakso, focusing on lignocellulosic biorefineries and industrial biotechnology. Since 2019, he leads the Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) research group, which has received funding from prestigious sources including the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and the European Research Council. His research primarily addresses the valorization of industrial side-streams, functional materials derived from macromolecular lignins, and the development of lignin nanoparticles for various applications. Notable projects under his leadership include SUSLIG, LignoLife, and UPSIDEHYB, each aiming to innovate sustainable material solutions. Sipponen has published extensively on the integration of lignin materials into a circular economy, emphasizing their role in sustainable production methods. He has also received several awards, reinforcing his contribution to the field as a Wallenberg Academy Fellow and through various research grants. He has taught Green Chemistry at the Bachelor's level and supervised multiple advanced courses in chemistry, demonstrating his commitment to education in these vital areas of research.
