Biography

Professor Mikael Simons is a renowned neurobiologist and neurologist whose research focuses on cell biology and brain regeneration. His major research interest lies in the biology of glial cells, where he specifically investigates the molecular mechanisms of myelin formation and regeneration. The significance of myelin is underscored in dysmyelinating diseases, where loss of myelin can lead to considerable neurological deficits, as seen in conditions like multiple sclerosis, which involves autoimmune reactions causing demyelinating lesions in the central nervous system. His research group aims to decode the molecular mechanisms of myelin biogenesis to develop innovative therapies for remyelination. Simons studied medicine and obtained his doctorate from Heidelberg University. After completing his specialist training as a neurologist and obtaining a postdoctoral teaching qualification in Tübingen, he became a group leader and senior physician at the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine. In 2009, he joined the University of Göttingen as a Professor of Neurology, and in 2015, he was appointed to the newly established Chair of Molecular Neurobiology at the Technical University of Munich's School of Medicine.
